Integrating Gmail into your desktop

Well, like a lot of people I use Gmail as my mail account. I also don't use any application to access it beside the web interface (firefox)

So I wrote a little bash script to handle it on my new ubuntu desktop :

#!/bin/bash
#This is a short script to handle mail with Gmail.
#If given without paramaters it will launch Firefox with the gmail page.
#If given with a paramater it will open with a compose page with the paramater as the 'to' part
if [ $1 != "\n" ]; then
    tmp=${1#mailto://}
    tmp2=${tmp#mailto:}
    exec firefox "http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=cm&fs=1&to=$tmp2&su=&body=&cc=&bcc="
else
    exec firefox "http:///www.gmail.com"
fi

Basically if you just run it it will open firefox with the gmail website. if you run it with a mailto link or a mail address it will open the gmail compose page with the appropriate address.

Gnome can be configured to do this with the following steps :

in System->Preferences->prefered applications -> internet -> mail reader. you should put the script path and afterwards %s

run gconf-editor and then in desktop -> gnome -> url-handlers -> mailto put in the command the script and then %s and mark the enabled.

This is it. all fun and games now :-)
It's also nice with the deskbar-applet where you can just insert a mail address and it will automaticlly open firefox with a compose mail tab with the requested address.

Sanity check

Well, I think the last few days deserves a short summery.
The good :
a) Went rollerblading on saturday morning and fell only once - much fun, I'll do my best to make it a habit (the blading, not the falling). A little girl in the park pointed at me and told to her father " Daddy he fell !" - very observant kid, I see great things ahead for you.
b)Saw some pretty meteorites with good company - though I think I should have made some more specific and better phrased wishes...

The ugly :
a) Feelings slightly dented over obvious lady. Suggested cure : one dose of time and two doses of fun.

The bad :
a) Two teeth removed, anesthesia, wore off recently and it's starting to hurt... hopefully I'll manage to catch some sleep. Though I guess it's for the best if it will prevent future complications.
b) I herby have a new auto-imunic disorder called : Hashimoto's disease
Basically now that my body decided that he's bored with my pancreas he decided to explore new targets, for example - my thyroid. The symptoms are rather mild and I'm not experiencing anything extraodinary (though on the depression part I'll let you decide). Treatment is rather easy as well, my doctor will need to decide of a dosage of synthetic hormones and a pill or two a day and I should be fine in the long run. It's a carrot cake next to most disorders...
But it's still bloody annoying...

For conclusion. More rollerblading, less lead-on girls and health disorders...

Ubuntu 7.04 - warning : linux rant

As our trusty router failed recently we were forced to relay on the kindness of strangers. Meaning we're using the neighbors internet for now...
Unfortunately my desktop is unable to find the various networks, probably due to its not so good network card.
So I had to draw my old, and not so trusty laptop which so far runs... till the HD connector fails again.

I didn't really want to work on windows so I decided I'd give the new Ubuntu a test run.
It rocks.

It took me more time to download it then install. I inserted the disk, run the installer and I had a system already configured with my correct computer drivers, hardware acceleration, wifi (and I can see all the networks around), hebrew layout and language changes.

When I tried to play a wmv and an mp3 I got a screen telling me I need to install the codecs, I said yes and then - poof - it runs.
That was the same for quicktime and flash afterwards.

I can read my NTFS drive and pretty much do anything. It took less then an hour and the only thing I needed to do was download the skype package by myself. I already had gaim and configured it to use my Gtalk account.

Rock on ubuntu. Linux is ready for the desktop.

Wrong way on the coast way

A small near death experience I had a few hours ago:

I was driving to Haifa for another "exciting" day of studies. Maybe I was speeding a bit (~120) but luckily for me the road was clear and not much traffic.
I was in the left lane when I suddenly noticed a rather big hole in the road in-front of me. There was no car on my right so I broke right. Unfortunately I was speeding and the road was rather smooth. I did avoid the hole but I also started sliding without much control (bloody newton's laws) so first I slid perpendicular to the road and then I did a nice 180 degrees and kept sliding perpendicular just facing the other way. And for the grand finale - I did a nice 270 degrees and found myself stopping in the left lane, engine down and facing the wrong way seeing the traffic heading my way.
I hit the distress lights and luckily the traffic wasn't heavy and no one rammed into me. A few moments later I managed to turn around and resume my journey.

No harm to me, the car or anyone else. I even managed to survive this without getting a heart-attack so I must be in better health then I thought :-)

Anyway kids, don't try this at home,at the road or ever.
And will someone say "Hagomel" on me please.

Ok, as some already know, I broke up with my girlfriend today. It was good while it lasted but I fear it had to end and better now then later.
7 weeks till the semester end.
Work is not easy but so far I think I'm managing as well as I can.
A new computer is on it's way, hopefully it will be good.

That's about it, time to keep going. God knows where I'll find single girls this time...

168.5 down 9.5 to go

Well, the semester started. The last one (it better be)
I had a nostalgic moment when I sat down for the first lecture (Bakara 1) I had a small feeling of "oh it is interesting and fun..."
That passed about 20 minutes after and I remembered why I don't like the Technion.

But anyway that's not the point. The point is :
I FINISHED THE PROJECT !!!!!!!!!
That's it, it's done, next week I'll get my grade and that's it. Presentation was made, book was handed in and a CD containing the material was given to the appropriate people. I'm done, finished and that's it. 3 courses and I'm out of that place for good. And more then a few moments too late.

Though it is nifty now that I can sit in the library with the laptop and wireless internet. Much better then the musty pcfarm. Yes, the library is airy compared to the pcfarm.

For conclusion:
YYYYYYIIIHHHHHAAAAAA !!!!!!

I'll probably start with verification and hopefully work my way up to development.
I wish to say special thanks to Applied Materials for being very non-professional (and some other less complimentary terms) and delaying me for more then two months - and still not giving me a straight answer till today.

Well, here goes nothing I guess.
